Want to make your spaces more welcoming for 2SLGBTQI+ seniors, older people, and elders?
1. Respect Everyone's Pronouns:
Ask, Don't Assume: When you meet someone new, politely ask for their pronouns. You can say, "What pronouns do you use?" or "How would you like me to refer to you?"
Share Your Own: Introduce yourself with your pronouns to normalize the practice. For example, "Hi, I'm [Your Name], and I use [Your Pronouns]."
Correct Mistakes Gracefully: If you accidentally use the wrong pronouns, apologize briefly and correct yourself. Don't dwell on the mistake.
2. Choose Inclusive Language:
Think Beyond Assumptions: Avoid making assumptions about someone's marital status, family structure, or relationships.
Use Neutral Terms: Instead of "husband/wife," say "partner" or "spouse." Instead of "son/daughter," say "child."
Be Mindful of Stereotypes: Avoid using language that reinforces harmful stereotypes about age, gender identity, or sexual orientation.
3. Show You're an Ally:
Display Symbols of Support: Place a rainbow flag, sticker, or poster in a visible location to signal that your space is welcoming to 2SLGBTQI+ individuals.
Use Inclusive Signage: Ensure your restrooms, changing rooms, and other facilities are labeled with gender-neutral signage.
Promote Inclusive Events: Host events and activities that celebrate diversity and create opportunities for connection.
4. Listen and Learn:
Create Safe Spaces for Sharing: Encourage open and respectful dialogue about 2SLGBTQI+ issues.
Seek Feedback: Regularly ask for feedback from 2SLGBTQI+ seniors, older people, and elders about how to make your space more inclusive.
Stay Informed: Educate yourself about the unique challenges and experiences of 2SLGBTQI+ seniors.
5. Review and Adapt Your Practices:
Examine Your Forms: Ensure all intake forms, applications, and other documents allow individuals to self-identify their gender identity and sexual orientation.
Update Your Policies: Review and update your organization's policies and procedures to ensure they are inclusive and equitable for everyone.
Provide Training: Offer training opportunities for staff and volunteers on 2SLGBTQI+ inclusivity and sensitivity.
Creating a truly inclusive space is an ongoing process. By taking these small but meaningful steps today, you can make a big difference in the lives of 2SLGBTQI+ seniors, older people, and elders.
